Rumors circulating around Detroit in 1953 of a possible merger between Hudson and another independent automaker were finally confirmed on January 14, 1954 when Hudson’s Board of Directors approved a deal with Nash-Kelvinator, which was ratified by shareholders on March 24, 1954. On May 1, 1954, Hudson officially became part of American Motors Corp. and 26 days later, employees were notified production would move from Detroit to the Kenosha, Wisconsin Nash factory. On October 30, 1954, the last Detroit-built Hudson rolled off the production line, marking the end of “true” Hudson designed-and-built automobiles. Throughout this drama, Hudson employees, designers, and engineers produced some of the company’s finest cars, proving the Hudson Motor Car Company was not going down without a fight, giving us the exotic coachbuilt Italia, plus numerous prototypes and final versions of the iconic “Step Down” models. While Hudson lived on – mostly in name only – through 1957, its products continue to be celebrated by legions of collectors and enthusiasts worldwide.

Hudson styling was revised for 1954, with “senior” models updated with cues borrowed from the compact Jet, but with a more successful execution. The mainstay Hornet, which earned 81 victories during its brilliant racing career, continued as Hudson’s image and performance leader. Featuring sleek bodylines suggestive of speed and efficiency, the final Detroit-built Hornets were equipped with numerous standard features including most available for the Super Wasp, plus such desirable items as crank-type front vent windows, a cast aluminum ‘high-compression’ cylinder head, electric clock, foam rubber rear seat cushions, Custom wheel covers, and upgraded trim. According to its VIN, this very attractive and highly original 1954 Hudson Hornet 6 Sedan is a late-production example built during September 1954. Equipped with the legendary ‘Twin H-Power’ dual-carburetor intake system, this Hornet 6 retains its original “Lipstick Red” paint color, one reputedly applied to late-production Hudsons to use up factory paint stocks. According to Eldon Hostetler’s autobiography, prior owner William Dely of Lewiston, Michigan owned the Hornet for many years, never drove it during winter, and had good storage for it. The Hornet joined the Hostetler Collection in 2005, only requiring new upholstery. Sleek and well-presented, this “Twin H-Power’ 1954 Hornet 6 Sedan is a wonderful example of the last “true” Hudsons produced.
