De Dion Bouton type ?


De Dion Bouton type ?This weekend I buy a very special saw ! The chassis is a De Dion Bouton approximately of 1901-1904, do you have any idea of the exact type ?

The frame has been cut on the front ...

After I read the book of Michael Edwards, it seems to be a Type S long wheel based.

M.Gouinequ , the chassis is certainly not a K1 or a K2 , but the cross tube suggests that it may have had the same gearbox . I cannot send you a picture of mine on this forum , but if you write with your email address I will send you pictures of my cross tube for you to compare

Davy, chassis numbers are rare on these models, so I would be very surprised if you could find one.

Davy, I wrote a book on the early De Dions (Types and Specifications 1899-1904). There are a number of chassis diagrams there that should help.

I found some picture of a K1 type of 1902, it looks very similar and the front axle is the same. For the back sping, there are originally a transversal spring which have been remove.

Do you have some picture of a S type chassis ?

De Dion Bouton made four Types with parallel tubular chassis: Types J, K and O (single cylinder), and Type S (twin cylinder). I believe that your photographs are of the rear and central portions of the Type S, on the basis that the front fitting of the rear spring are unique to that vehicle. There are, however, some lateral tubular bracing members absent, the front axle is wrong and the rear element of the back springs are not quite correct. The Type S was made from the end of May 1903.
