Few cars are as instantly recognizable as the Porsche 911. The iconic, slope-backed bodywork developed by Ferdinand Porsche, son of company founder Ferry Porsche, conceals a lithe chassis with unique handling characteristics stemming from its rear-engine layout. Originally called the 901, the model designation changed just after launch due to a conflict with naming rights held by Peugeot. The 911 has evolved over decades through motorsport competition to encompass numerous variants and remain one of the best sports cars of all time, coveted for its compelling mix of style, performance, reliability, and drivability.
Created to replace the Porsche 356, the 911’s first series ran from 1964 to 1969 and remains incredibly popular for its purity of design and engineering. The 2.0-liter, 130-horsepower, flat-six engine was a considerable upgrade over the 1.6-liter flat-four that powered the 356. Compact with a low center of gravity, the air-cooled six-cylinder complements the finely tuned handling traits of the Porsche 911’s chassis and has become a defining attribute of the model line.
This 1966 Porsche 911 Coupe completed production on 11 May 1966, finished in Glasurit Black with a Black leatherette interior and equipped with a Webasto heater, tinted glass, two headrests, bumper horns, and Phoenix tires, according to an accompanying Porsche Certificate of Authenticity. A registration document from previous owner Harry Hills of Los Alamitos indicates the car was in California as early as the 1980s. Accompanied by its California black license plate with registration tag from 1984, the Porsche entered the present collection in 2014, where its steward carefully considered and planned a thorough restoration executed to a high level while preserving the integrity of its original interior.
Beginning in 2016, the factory black paintwork and brightwork were refinished and the mechanical components refurbished to factory specifications, with invoices on file for review. Retaining numerous correct features and its numbers-matching engine and gearbox, this sympathetically restored 911 Coupe stands as one of the most cherished Porsches in the consignor’s collection, prized for its degree of authenticity, which will surely impress future caretakers with its timeless character, instantly evident as soon as one sits behind the wheel.
