1964 Chestnut Canoe Company ‘Runabout’ | The Summer Serenade Auction | 18th July

The Chestnut Canoe Company, based in Fredericton, New Brunswick, was one of Canada's most respected wooden boat builders. Chestnut are best known for canoes but they also advertised inshore, outboard utility boats as well as dinghies and fishing boats. They produced wooden outboard boats throughout the early 1960s before manufacturing gradually moved towards fibreglass construction. Beautifully restored to a very high standard, the hull lines and deck layout are very much in keeping with their production with Cedar-strip planking and varnished mahogany trim; Canadian-style flared bow and open cockpit.

It also has a ‘book-matched’ mahogany foredeck with contrasting king plank and holly-style caulking. The transom has a rounded ‘wine-glass’ design with a distinctive tumblehome at the stern (the hull narrows above the waterline) and a low wraparound tinted windscreen. The interior benefits from fore-and-aft new bench upholstery and fits the Chestnut perfectly. Interestingly, The name ‘Santa Barbara 1965’ is clearly painted on the hull but this is probably a later decorative name applied during restoration. Unfortunately, there is no builder’s plate or serial number stamped into the transom or stem although these were often removed during restoration. The outboard motor is a modern Mercury 20hp four-stroke and the outfit comes complete with a fully galvanised brand-new ‘Extreme’ trailer. Consigned by Edward Bridger-Stille
