Making its debut at the 2005 Frankfurt Motor Show, the Porsche Cayman featured an aggressive, yet familiar, front-end design, and a fluid silhouette with exquisite detailing and the functional aerodynamics of an automatic rear spoiler. Far more than just a Boxster with a hardtop, it was a completely distinct, sculpted fastback coupe designed to carve its own identity and target a new segment of Porsche enthusiasts. Strategically positioned between the wildly popular open-top Boxster and the iconic 911, the Cayman filled a crucial void in the Porsche model lineup.
In 2009, the Cayman received its first major facelift alongside a suite of mechanical upgrades. Most notable were the new powertrains, with the standard Cayman now powered by a 2.9-liter flat-six producing 265 horsepower, while the high-performance Cayman S utilized a 3.4-liter flat-six delivering an impressive 320 hp. Both engines could be paired with either the standard six-speed manual or Porsche’s revolutionary seven-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission. Subtle exterior design changes and modernization of the interior, including tech, brought the Cayman in line with the rest of the Porsche lineup. This mid-cycle refresh carried through to the 2012 model year, concluding the first-generation (987) Cayman production.
This 2010 Porsche Cayman S left the factory finished in the optional factory exterior finish of Meteor Grey Metallic over black leather. This Cayman S is powered by the 320-horsepower, 3.4-liter flat-six, which is backed by the optional seven-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission. Nicely specified from new, additional optional highlights include Sport Wheel with paddle shift, universal audio interface, Bose high-end sound package, PCM 3.0 with Extended Navigation, automatic climate control, self-dimming mirrors, and rain sensor.
Today this Cayman S is offered having covered 33,951 miles from new at time of cataloguing. The car has been modified for track use. It features a white and blue Private Pavement #4 race livery wrap, with Thermal Club decals, celebrating the track where it was frequently campaigned. The car’s original color peeks through in certain areas, as the sideview mirrors remain unwrapped, as do the door sills, showing off the original Meteor Grey Metallic. It rides on a set of race wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires. On the interior, the driver’s seat has been swapped out in favor of a Sparco race seat with Schroth Racing seatbelts, while the passenger seat remains factory. Behind the seats a roll cage has been installed, protecting occupants while ensuring ingress and egress is unaffected. The rest of the interior remains in stock form, including the steering wheel, instrumentation, infotainment, and climate controls.
By virtue of its near-perfect mid-engine weight distribution, the Cayman possesses an inherent physics advantage over its rear-engined sibling, the 911. The Cayman remains a purist’s masterpiece, a perfect daily driver that is equally capable on the track—a true driver's car that delivers what is arguably one of the most balanced and rewarding sports car experiences on the road today.
