About Millipedes and Rounded Hoods

From 1911 on the Mercedes plant in Gaggenau had been used for the production of commercial models. However, output remained modest until the introduction of Mercedes’ first new post-war design, the L 6600 heavy-duty truck. It became highly popular, especially in the post-war re-emerging long-distance transport sector. Another new design was the cab-over-engine LP 333, known as the “Millipede”, which was built from 1958 and, with two steered front axles, was the tailor-made response to new restrictive regulations imposed on dimensions and weights in Germany. Some 1800 were made. In 1959, Daimler-Benz launched a new series of “rounded hood” trucks of which the heavy-duty versions were also produced in Gaggenau. These trucks remained successful in exports until the 1990s, and as far as we know, they were until recently still produced in Argentina.
