Back from the brink

By the end of the 1950s BMW was in dire straits. Until then the company’s output had been expensive sportscars and luxury saloons with V8 engines, that sold in little numbers. A restructuring was needed and that plan was accepted exactly fifty years ago on November 30, 1960. BMW’s breakthrough came with the introduction of the 1500 in 1961. It was just what the public wanted and ever since BMW has been building sporting sedans that could be had with many different engines.

Sadly this same 30 November 1960, 50 years ago was the very last day for DeSoto
