Back-to-Back: genuine Rally 405 or Racing Sierra?

Okay, you’ve done well in life and have now comfortably passed the 50-year mark. You’ve spent plenty of money on your beloved classic and have entered a few races or rallies with it. But let’s be honest: they were more demos or jollies than serious competition, where coffee stops, long lunches, and prize-giving dinners overshadowed any actual sporting element. Your car may look mean, covered in sponsor stickers, but in reality they belong to your mates, who mainly use their sponsorship as an excuse to join for a drink. Admit it: the real motorsport adventures you always dreamed of and promised yourself are still a long way off.

But it’s not too late. Broad Arrow might just have the solution: a genuine race car and a genuine rally car from your teenage years, complete with authentic competition history, proper sponsor decals and, remarkably, still relatively affordable.

The rally car in question is a 1988/89 Peugeot 405 Mi16 fitted with all the Group A bells and whistles. This particular example was one of four built for Peugeot Italy by Italtecnica to compete in the Italian Rally Championship. It was registered on May 5, 1989, in Milan to tackle the Targa Florio that very same day. Driven by Andrea Zanussi and Paolo Amati under race number 2, the car claimed class honors and finished third overall on its debut. It continued rallying until 1995 and has not been seen in action for the past 31 years, although it is said to be ready to go again…

Always preferred racing to rallying? Did you have posters of Andy Rouse or Klaus Ludwig on your bedroom wall? Then this Ford Sierra RS500 Cosworth might well bring you to your knees. This 1989 car is a Group A-specification example built by the Italian Team Imberti, although, oddly enough, it never raced in period. Now presented in the RS500 livery used for the 1988 Spa 24 Hours, it is nevertheless entirely period-correct — and with more than twice the power of the Peugeot, yet without carrying twice the estimate…
