Back to the roots of the Targa Florio

In 1906 Vincenzo Florio, the younger heir to a well-to-do Sicilian family, organized a motor race along a circuit through the island’s Madonie mountains. That race became the famous Targa Florio that has been held almost every year since that first day. Piero Taruffi, the great road racer who won the 38th Targa in 1954 driving a 3.3-litre Lancia D24, described the circuit like this: “No circuit in the world other than the Targa Florio brings out such driving ability; (…) a good driver, even if not at the wheel of a powerful car, will always find a way to do well and set times which may not be the stuff of records but will give him the satisfaction of feeling good at what he is doing, (…) you need to have a perfect technique, heart, resistance, intelligence”. Renamed this year as ‘Eco Targa Florio Classic’ it was a huge success and next year the event will be held again during the weekend of 10th to 14th October 2012. Registration is now open, see here for the details.
