Bullit Mustang resurfaced. But that letter..!

Much has been said and written about the Mustang from Bullit that came out of an almost 40-year hibernation last week. We used the car's resufacing for an April’s Fools Day article some years ago and several of you fell for it. This time it’s real, though. This great article tells you everything you need to know, quoting all the people involved and explaining things in detail.

Reading that, you will come across the letter that Steve McQueen wrote trying to buy the car, back in 1977. He sent that to the current owner’s dad and a copy is linked in the article above. Or here again.

That letter is a bit of a strange one. Did McQueen really want to buy back the car? That seems nothing more than logical. But when you read it you almost doubt it. Why choose such words?

We – and you, too? - were not the only ones thinking just that. The New York Times’ car scribe Lawrence Ulrich had a look at the letter, too, and says McQueen couldn’t have done worse, adding he is ‘jerking around and wasting your time’ while the letter is ‘dripping with bad faith'. He concludes: “McQueen comes off as patronizing, a rich man willing to do a solid for a regular guy, but treating him like a rube.” Read his article here.
