When the first four-seater touring car was driven from the Gorky Automobile Works(GAZ works) in 1932 it looked more than slightly like its American cousin, the Model A Ford, for the GAZ-A was built with considerable help from Ford engineers. The GAZ M1 car, constructed in 1936, also bore a great likeness to the 1933-1934 American product, although Ford furnished no direct assistance on this or any further GAZ designs. Ford influence continued to be felt, however, as was shown by the appearance of sedans turned out until the German invasion of 1941. GAZ model M11 (11-73) was built in 1940 as a further development of the GAZ M1 sedan car for sale. It was a five-seater version with a 6-cylinder, water-cooled engine of 76hp. A fuel consumption of 17 litres during 100km was obtained and maximum speed was about 70mph.
During the war years the plant manufactured the GAZ-67, a 4-cylinder utility vehicle for the armed services and produces the ‘GAZ B’ version of this even now. A GAZ 69 heavy-duty, 4-cylinder, 72hp, 4-wheel-drive utility is manufactured, with Gorky plant cooperation, at the Ulyanovsk Motor Works. Like the ‘GAZ 67’, it is used by both civilians and the military.
All GAZ models originating from Gorky and its subsidiary plants are given a number and may also be known by a more familiar ‘brand’ name. The GAZ M20 sedan was better known as the GAZ Pobieda or GAZ Victory. The Volgas that replaced it, were designated GAZ M21, M22 and M25. The Zim limousine was the GAZ M12, and its successor the GAZ Chaika the M13. The Gorky works were once the largest car plant in Europe, and further expansion is in hand to meet the growing demand for private transport in the Soviet Union.
