In 1959 the first Trabant car (the 50) appeared, succeeding the Zwickau P70. The 500cc 2-cylinder 2-stroke engine of the Trabant car was based on the P70 engine. In 1962 the engine capacity was increased to 594cc. Like the P70, the Trabant car has a fiberglass body and front-wheel drive. Over 300.000 Trabant cars had been made by 1965.
