The IFA model F9 was superseded by the Warburg cars, which followed the same mechanical design, using a 3-cylinder 2-stroke engine and front drive, but these Wartburg cars had a new body. At first an 894cc engine of 40bhp was installed in the Wartburg car, also available with 50bhp for the sports version Wartburg car. Engine capacity of the Wartburg car was raised to 991cc (45bhp) in 1962. The Wartburg Knight model, sold since 1967, had a restyled body, semi-trailing-arm rear suspension, and 13in wheels. The 1972 British price was only £719.
