Fiat Moretti 850 Coupé Sportiva

The first time I ever spotted this car, I thought it had to be some coachbuilt sportscar from the sixties, with the size of a Fiat Dino Coupé and fitted with an equivalent power unit. I was wrong. This Fiat Moretti 850 Coupé Sportiva is with its wheelbase of 203 cm (80 inches) and height of only 104 cm (41 inches), a very small car. The standard Fiat 850 engine was enlarged to 982 cc and produced a whopping 75- 80hp.. Anyway, coachbuilt it is, by Giovanni Moretti.
"Moretti Fabbrica Automobili e Stabilimenti Carrozzeria" was an Italian car and body car manufacturer based in Turin between 1925 and 1989. Until the 1950s, Moretti designed the vehicles, including the engines themselves; Later, the company concentrated on special bodies based on Fiat technology. With this Coupé Sportiva, Moretti introduced in 1967 their last car that was fully customizable. To give an idea, in 1967 you could buy a Fiat 850 Coupé for 950,000 lira's. Or you could buy a fully personalized Moretti 850 Coupé Sportiva for 2,000,000 lira's, with the same chassis and (tweaked) engine, but with a pretty unique bodywork.  There were 180.000 examples built of the 1965-1968 Fiat 850 Coupé and only 300 of the Moretti. It seems there are nowadays only two dozen left, which makes it an extremely rare car.  As we speak, there is a Fiat Moretti 850 Sportiva Coupe for sale in the Netherlands Text: Marius Hille Ris Lambers Photo credits: John Kuiper, Rex Gray and dave_7
