Friday Lady - Name that Place (3)

Another Friday, another Friday ady. And another Name that Place puzzle. Yes, we found you once again and this time we can only hope it is not too easy. The car is a Mercedes 180 (or a 190, or is it a 220? – please enlighten us) of the 1950s or 1960s and it’s seems to have some nice optional extras fitted. The radiator grille uses slats that have been closed in order to keep the engine not too cool, while the full sliding roof is opened up to get the most out of the sun inside.

It seems as though the picture may have been messed with, we don’t know as this is how we got it.

But it’s the environment it is in we are most interested in for now. The tall building in the background points into the direction of another well-known skiing resort. All we want to say is that the Mercedes’ number plate does not point into the direction of the place. Do you know it..?

The senator Giovanni Agnelli and his son Edoardo had the idea (and the money!) of building a skiing resort. The place and the surroundings were ideal: a highland encircled by mountains and situated near Torino. The Agnelli company constructed four cable cars and the two famous towers: the “Duchi d’Aosta hotel” (white tower) and “La Torre” (red tower). You can still see the two towers which are both owned by the Club Med. In the following years, Sestriere became a very famous ski resort especially because of the different competitions and meetings that took place here.

The place could be Via Lattea in Italy. The car is a 180 (Came September 1953). The number plate is from the American occupation zone. A stands for American zone and W for Württemberg. Those number plates had been used from 1948 until 1956 in Germany. I can`t identify the lady behind the wheel. Please send a photo without her wearing sun glasses.

I forgot to mention, there are no "slats" to cover the grill- this car has some kind of winter cover, possibly fabric. As far as I know, It did not come with a winter cover, it likely is an aftermarket item.

I can't name the place but the car is a 180. The 190 has chrome trim at the top of the doors just below the windows, this goes around the back of the car to connect both sides. It's not a 220 as only the 180-190 models have the heater openings on either side of the grill.

The car is in fact an early Mercedes 180 (1953 or '54) and the place is Sestriere, a ski resort in Piemont, Italy, not far from the French border-
