Geoff Tanner and the Norton that made history

Some motorcycles stand out because of their engineering. Others because of their performance. Every now and then, however, a machine appears that combines both qualities. The recently offered 1954 Norton International Clubman undoubtedly belongs in that rare category.

The motorcycle is one of only three examples specially built by Norton to full Clubman racing specification for the 1954 Isle of Man TT. At a time when the British single-cylinder still dominated the racing scene, young privateer Geoff Tanner was given the opportunity to compete against the leading factory-backed teams of the era.

Tanner made the most of that opportunity. During the Junior Clubmans TT, he rode this 350 cc Norton to an impressive fifth-place finish among the formidable BSA Gold Stars and other factory-supported rivals. His average speed of 81.54 mph and a fastest lap of no less than 83 mph remain exceptional achievements for a Norton International of this displacement.
For Tanner, his Isle of Man appearance marked a major turning point. The talented London rider had progressed from local sprint and club racing to become one of the most promising British privateers of his generation. A year later, he confirmed his reputation by winning both the Junior and Senior Manx Grand Prix aboard a Norton Manx, an achievement that secured his place in British motorcycling history.

The 1954 Norton International Clubman is currently offered for sale by Century Limited.
