InterClassics presents: Legends of the Rising Sun

Press Release

Following the record-breaking success of the anniversary edition of InterClassics Maastricht, we're looking ahead with renewed energy! We are proud to unveil the theme for the 31st edition of InterClassics Maastricht: Legends of the Rising Sun. In 2026, the spotlight will shine on iconic sports and racing cars from Japan.

Ticket sales start on September 1, 2025.

Japan’s automotive industry gave the world unforgettable models like the Toyota 2000GT, Nissan Skyline, and Honda NSX. Japanese factory teams also made their mark in motorsports: Honda in Formula 1, Mazda at Le Mans, and Toyota in the World Rally Championship. These sports and racing cars embody Japanese work ethic, blending craftsmanship with cultural heritage.

Through a curated selection of around twenty legendary models, we will tell the story of the Legends of the Rising Sun.

Did you know?
2000GT Targa
It’s well known that Toyota built a few 2000GT Roadsters for the James Bond film You Only Live Twice. Less known is the existence of a Targa prototype that preceded them. The story goes that Sean Connery wasn’t visible enough on camera during chase scenes, which led to the decision to drop the Targa version altogether. One of these ultra-rare cars now resides in a Belgian Toyota collection.

Rotary Engine
Thanks to the Mazda RX-3 (1971), rotary engines became mainstream. While brands like NSU, Mercedes, and GM failed to solve the technical challenges, Mazda succeeded. With over 280,000 units sold, the RX-3 brought the Wankel engine to the masses and proved that the concept could work.

€934,375
You read that right—the Honda NSX has become a million-euro car. A white 2003 NA2 NSX-R was auctioned last weekend at the Villa d'Este Concours for a staggering €934,375, setting an all-time record for the model.
