06:30 Start of day 3: Rome.
21:30 Arrival of the first car in Parma.
The weather had changed today. At first grey and cloudy, soon there was rain and a bit later diluvial showers. Our windscreen whispers couldn’t keep up with it. How did those with only goggles cope? We might never know since we stopped for a coffee and met a friend and curator of Museo Taruffi in Bagnoregio. In 1957 this local driver won the last edition of the Mille Miglia in a 315 S Ferrari. At the age of 50, this would also be his last race. One of his most notable achievements would be taking second place in 1953 in the 1-2-3 for Lancia on the Panamericana (1953).
The museum shows some of his test cars, some of his engineering ideas as well as the history of the V6 which was first put into production in the Aurelia and which only runs smoothly when at 60 degrees. Shame on you VAG, learn your history.
Back to the rally! As we said earlier, it poured down. We heard stories of participants with technical problems because of the water. Today was a real challenge... but luckily many succeeded in finishing in Parma! We are sure the participants cannot wait to take a hot shower. Tomorrow is already the last day of the 38th edition of the Mille Miglia - the route takes the entrants back to (sunny) Brescia!
Will be continued...
