March 12th 1952 was a cold and misty winter morning in Germany. Several selected journalists were invited by Mercedes-Benz to meet on the highway from Stuttgart to Heilbronn to watch the presentation of a new car. Some of those journalists may have skipped the invitation because of the cold, and quite rightly they later may have kicked themselves, because those that did go, had their first glimpse of the 300SL. Mercedes-Benz had high expectations of their new 'baby' and indeed the gull-wing, as it became affectionately known, had some great racing successes. But nobody present that cold misty morning could have expected that fifty years on the gull-wing would still be one of the most sought after automobiles.
