Renault 4 – the box on wheels that conquered the world

At the top of the all-time best-selling car list stands the iconic VW Beetle, followed closely by Ford’s legendary Model T. But did you know that the versatile Renault R4 claims third place, with over eight million units produced?

Introduced in 1961, the Renault R4 was initially seen as a response—or even a copy—of Citroën’s minimalist 2CV. However, Renault added just the right amount of extra ‘luxury’: a more refined finish, a practical fifth door in the form of a hatchback, and a smoother ride on paved roads. These subtle upgrades quickly won over a broad customer base, allowing the R4 to carve out its own niche.

The photo above, courtesy of Renault, captures a stylish moment from the early 1960s featuring the elegant Renault 4 La Parisienne from 1963. This special edition was designed with the female driver in mind, blending chic design with the R4’s legendary practicality.

Eventually sold and built in more than 100 countries—from France to Ivory Coast and from Slovenia to Chile—the R4 became a truly global car. Few boxes on wheels have ever captured so many hearts.

A simply brilliant & timeless design. The later GTL version, pulling a really high top gear ratio- about the same as a vintage Bentley- was absolutely tireless & unburstable. I have driven over 400,000 miles in a succession of these cars-such fun ! And you could do so much with them ! With the back seat removed, & front seats folded flat, two tall people could sleep in comfort, with a couple of dogs on the floor in front (windows slightly open !) Believe it or not, I have even brought a long & heavy Salmson S4C chassis frame back from France to the English midlands. On the roof, obviously. Handling was very tricky ! I still have a worn-out 4 GTL at the top of the garden, as a reminder of the happiest days of my life.
