Saving a border icon: the Caltex station gets a second life

As enthusiasts of historic automobiles, we believe it is important to preserve our heritage. This applies not only to classic vehicles, but also to historic buildings with a purpose. Recently, we learned about the old Caltex filling station in the south of the Netherlands, close to the Belgian and German borders: regarded by some as an icon, yet left to deteriorate for years.

Now, however, a group of initiators has stepped forward with plans to breathe new life into the building — and they are seeking your support. The aim is to restore the site to a public function that suits its unique border location. Think of a small-scale hospitality venue where passers-by, walkers, cyclists and motoring enthusiasts can stop and linger.

To make this possible, funding is required. Part of this will be provided by the BOEi foundation (the project initiator), as well as by public authorities and funds. Private individuals who feel a connection to the building are also invited to contribute. BOEi is issuing bonds, the proceeds of which are invested directly into the project. Participants will also remain involved in its progress.
