The 1970s marked a key period in design for British Ford cars, with the box-type Zephyr Mk lV and Cortina Mk ll, giving way to the curves of the Cortina Mk lll and Consul Granada. This was a fact appreciated by Hardy Amies, designer for HRH Queen Elizabeth, when he used a backdrop of Ford cars (click!) to launch his 1973 collection of chic outfits. Mass produced cars may seem a world away from couture clothing but both rely on a high level of style and elegance to make an impact at first sight.
