Few classics evoke the carefree feeling of a summer holiday quite like the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia. With its elegant Italian lines, penned by Carrozzeria Ghia and built by Karmann in Germany, it proved from its introduction in 1955 that a Volkswagen could be not only dependable, but remarkably stylish as well.

Beneath its graceful bodywork lay the familiar mechanical components of the Beetle. That made the Karmann Ghia affordable to own, easy to maintain and perfectly suited to long holiday journeys. From the Alps to the Adriatic, and from the North Sea to Provence, thousands of families and enthusiasts created some of their fondest summer memories behind the wheel of this elegant coupé.

The photograph captures exactly that atmosphere. A sunny day by the water, children at play, a beach ball, shady trees and two gleaming white Karmann Ghias patiently waiting for the next drive. No rush, no traffic jams, no sat-navs—just winding roads, open windows and the unmistakable soundtrack of the air-cooled flat-four engine.
