The birth of the hatchback

We admit to have a soft spot for many kinds of automobiles. And the Renault R16 is certainly one of them. When introduced in late 1964 it created quite a sensation. Not only because it was a pleasant car to drive, but also by its elegant styling of the rear end, including the fifth door that was a novelty for a medium-sized car. Its designer had been Philippe Charbonneaux, (1917-1998), who had also worked with Delahaye, Berliet and Bugatti.
