From Amsterdam to The Hague by automobile is a distance of some 60 kilometers (forty miles), but due to the density of today’s traffic it will take you the best part of an hour. A sight we cannot miss in The Hague is the ‘Gevangenpoort’ (Prisoners’s Gate), a medieval prison close to the Houses of Parliament. It dates from the year 1420, but in 1882 it became a prison museum. On this recent picture the street looks almost deserted, but from experience we know that it can be just as busy as in the fifties. Only the traffic cop has long since been replaced by traffic lights.
