Bart Oosterling reports: In a copy of John Bolster’s book “Specials” I found 2 newspaper clippings (see 2nd clipping below) about Tony Lockey, a 15 year old who, after building his own workshop stone by stone first, was building his own 500-special early 1950 on a budget of GBP 35. Those were the days when everyone with some engineering talent and guts could build a racing car for a few quid and start racing. How different this is today. As my copy of Bolster’s book was the 2nd impression (May 1950) it could not report on the outcome of young Tony’s efforts. So out of curiousy I used Google and found out Tony was 17 when his car was finished. Sadly it seemed his “outdated” car stood no chance against the latest 500-specials. Probably Tony then followed a technical career, but what became of him is unclear. The clippings will stay in the book as a testimony of what a young man can achieve."
