Who is doing next year’s Giro di Sicilia?

There have been quite a few dashes through Italy in the last couple of months: the historic Targa Florio (April), Mille Miglia (May), Via Flaminia (May), oh and the Giro d’Italia (May). So what do we have left now that June has arrived? Well, you may have forgotten about the Giro di Sicilia: a classic car rally, spanning four days and just about all of the coastal roads on the isle of Sicily. It finished today, so you will be too late to enter now, but this may be one to remember for next year.

The original race was held three times from 1912 till 1914 and was revived for the first time in 1948. Until 1957 – just like its famous sister rally Mille Miglia – it was a yearly event on the Italian motor sports calendar. And like its now world famous sister rally, it had a time to beat: Clemente Biondetti and Igor Troubetzkoy drove their Ferrari 166 Allemano Spyder in 12 hours and 10 minutes precise to the finish in 1948, averaging 88,767 km/h. Perhaps not as impressive as Moss and Jenkins’ fabled record drive in ’57 - if you’ve ever driven the twisty roads of Sicily you know that’s quite something.

It sounds like a perfect ‘jolly’ to us. The number of cars is just right, with some exotic machinery as you’d expect from the Italians and the number of miles a day is limited to under 150 on average. Who is reporting for us for the next year?
