Oettinger No. 1877601
Though best known for its work with Volkswagen and Audi, Oettinger applied its motorsport-derived engineering expertise to Mercedes-Benz during the 1980s and early 1990s, developing highly sophisticated performance conversions for the W201 and W124 chassis. Founded by engineer Gerhard Oettinger, the firm was recognized for its comprehensive approach to engine development, employing enlarged-displacement configurations, revised cylinder heads, bespoke crankshafts, and forged internals. These measures significantly elevated output while preserving the refinement expected of Stuttgart engineering. Among its most notable applications were 3.6-liter conversions of the W124 300 E, which transformed the standard inline-six into a torque-rich powerplant while maintaining factory drivability and composure.
This 300 E-24 was built in October 1990 for the Syrian market and is finished in Blue-Black Metallic over a Black leather Sportline interior with power-adjustable, heated front seats. Factory equipment is extensive and includes Sportline suspension, electrically adjustable front seats with memory, Recaro seats front and rear, a leather-trimmed sports steering wheel, cruise control, air conditioning, and a power-operated sliding sunroof. The 3.0-liter inline-six (M104) was upgraded by Oettinger to 3.6-liter specification and is paired with a five-speed automatic transmission and an automatic limited-slip differential (ASD). It is further distinguished by 16-inch Oettinger five-spoke alloy wheels and an Oettinger instrument cluster featuring a 300 km/h speedometer with an engine oil temperature gauge, underscoring its period-tuned character. Exterior presentation is notably discreet, with Mercedes-Benz badging deleted and replaced by Oettinger scripts, retaining only the factory hood-mounted three-pointed star.
Accompanied by a CarVX Report, the vehicle was first registered in Japan in January 1993 and remained there where it was involved in a collision on 29 August 2023, after which it was repaired with airbags recorded as "OK." It was last registered in Japan on 11 September 2023 before being exported to Florida, arriving by 10 September 2024 and showing 129,275 kilometers. A rare expression of period German tuning applied to Stuttgart's most accomplished executive sedan, this Oettinger-enhanced W124 combines discreet visual presentation with significant mechanical reengineering, representing a compelling intersection of OEM refinement and contemporary motorsport-derived performance development.
