During the late 1980s and early 1990s, AMG occupied a unique position within the Mercedes-Benz world. Still operating independently from its headquarters in Affalterbach, the company transformed already capable Mercedes-Benz models into bespoke high-performance machines tailored to the exact specifications of discerning clients. Long before AMG became a fully integrated division of Mercedes-Benz, its conversions were largely hand-built, expensive, and produced in very limited numbers. Among the rarest of these creations are AMG-modified W201 models, particularly examples fitted with the coveted AMG Engineering Package and the firm's enlarged 3.2-liter M103 engine.

This exceptional 1992 Mercedes-Benz 190 E 3.2 AMG began life as a 190 E 2.6, completing production and receiving its first registration on 8 May 1992 as ordered through Mercedes-Benz's Magdeburg branch. Finished in elegant Brilliant Silver Metallic (744U) over a Black cloth interior, the car was specified from new with an unusually sporting configuration that included front and rear Sportline seats, a leather-trimmed Sportline steering wheel and gearshift lever, Automatic Slip Differential (ASD), electric sliding sunroof, air conditioning, heated washer system, and a 70-liter fuel tank.

Most significantly, the car's factory Data Card records option code 957, denoting the highly desirable AMG Engineering Package, an exceedingly rare notation seldom encountered on period Mercedes-Benz documentation. Additional AMG-related option codes include 774 for body modifications accommodating AMG wheels and 780 for AMG's sports suspension package with 17-inch AMG light-alloy wheels and wide tires. Together, these entries indicate that this example was destined for AMG treatment from new.

Its AMG Classic Conversion Confirmation shows the work at Affalterbach was completed on 17 July 1992, shortly after the car left standard Mercedes-Benz production. At that time, the original 2.6-liter M103 inline-six was enlarged by AMG to 3.2-liters, substantially increasing performance. Complementing the upgraded powerplant were an AMG exhaust system, AMG suspension, distinctive AMG Aero I wheels, and a 260 km/h AMG speedometer, creating a balanced and thoroughly engineered performance package.

Unlike many later AMG models produced after Mercedes-Benz assumed control of the company, pre-merger AMG automobiles were built in extremely limited numbers and often to individual customer specifications. As a result, exact production figures remain difficult to verify. Nevertheless, marque specialists generally believe fewer than 150 examples of the AMG 3.2-liter W201 were produced, making this among the rarest and most desirable variants of the iconic 190 E.

Having spent much of its life in Sweden, this AMG was imported to Florida in 2021, where it entered The Patina Collective. Today it stands as an exceptionally rare surviving example of AMG's independent era, combining the legendary W201 chassis with one of Affalterbach's most coveted pre-merger engine conversions. With documented AMG provenance and the highly coveted presence of the AMG Engineering Package noted directly on its factory data card, this 190 E 3.2 AMG represents a compelling opportunity to acquire one of the most elusive and authentic AMG sports sedans of the period.
