In the early 1990s, Mercedes-Benz set out to challenge the performance benchmark established by BMW's M5, developing a W124-based flagship that would demonstrate the full breadth of Stuttgart engineering capability. The result was the Mercedes-Benz 500 E, a discreet yet formidable sports sedan conceived in close collaboration with Porsche. Far more than a conventional derivative, the 500 E was extensively re-engineered with a widened track, revised bodywork, and substantial structural modifications that placed it beyond the limits of standard Mercedes-Benz production capacity.

As a result, assembly required an unusual and highly specialized production process split between Mercedes-Benz and Porsche's Rössle-Bau facility in Zuffenhausen. Each chassis was transferred between the two manufacturers multiple times during construction, with final assembly and finishing completed by hand. The complexity of this process meant that each 500 E required approximately 18 days to complete, underscoring the model's low-volume, near coachbuilt character within the W124 range.

Already recognized for its exceptional chassis balance and build quality, the 500 E would later serve as a foundation for further enhancement by AMG prior to its full integration into Mercedes-Benz. In this instance, the car was entrusted to Affalterbach, where the original 5.0-liter V8 was expanded to 6.0 liters through an increase in bore and stroke to 100 mm by 94.8 mm. Output rose from 320 horsepower to approximately 381 hp, delivering a marked increase in torque and mid-range response. Complementary upgrades included an AMG performance exhaust system, revised sport suspension calibration, and a 300 km/h speedometer, aligning instrumentation with the car's elevated performance envelope.

The specification was further enhanced with Recaro front seats and 17-inch AMG Aero I alloy wheels with body-colored centers and polished lips, reinforcing the model's period AMG aesthetic. According to the accompanying original bill of sale dated 23 March 1993, the vehicle was specified in Black (040) over black leather, with a retail price of just under 159,000 DM. Following AMG's modifications, a further approximately 71,000 DM was added, bringing the total period cost to over 230,000 DM, a figure equivalent to nearly $140,000 at the time and approaching $300,000 in contemporary terms!

Accompanied by a comprehensive history file including its AMG order forms, early German Fahrzeugbrief registration with certification of AMG upgrades, and subsequent service records, the car presents as a highly complete and well-documented example of the pre-merger AMG era. Imported to the United States in 2021, this 500 E 6.0 AMG stands as a particularly compelling representation of the intersection between Mercedes-Benz engineering rigor, Porsche production expertise, and AMG performance development during a formative period in German performance sedan history.
